Description:

Judge Joseph Story ANS on 1830 Shipping Form for Flour and Whiskey

1p of a bifolium, measuring 8.25" x 10", No place, dated April 28, 1830. A shipping form from shipmaster George Williams, addressed to Judge Joseph Story, notifying him of a shipment of two barrels of white wheat flour and one barrel of old rye whiskey aboard the Brig "Rice Plant", to be paid over to Messrs Griggs and Weld of Boston. Joseph Story has written a short note at the bottom of the form, stating "I have paid the amount $37'72 to Mr. Joseph Williams in the Draft. Joseph Story." There is also an additional handwritten note from George Williams to Story, explaining further details of the shipment. The form has flattened mail folds with light toning and soiling throughout. Paper loss on the address page from where the seal was broken, with a few small strips of tape at the folds. This does not affect any of the text. Boldly signed by Story.

Joseph Story (1779 -1845) was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving from 1812 to 1845. He is best known for presiding over the Amistad case, in which a group of illegally sold Africans provoked a rebellion aboard the Spanish schooner "La Amistad" in 1839, killing the captain and cook during the takeover. Justice Joseph Story delivered the Court's decision on March 9, 1841, stating that the men were "unlawfully kidnapped, and forcibly and wrongfully carried on board a certain vessel" and that "the said negroes be declared to be free, and be dismissed from the custody of the court, and go without delay." The case would be one of the most important on record regarding slavery until Dred Scott in 1857.
