Juan Trippe, Pan-Am Founder, Discusses Samuel Goldwyn "photoplay"

1p TLS signed by Juan Trippe (1899-1981), founder and President of Pan American Airways, Inc., as "J.T. Trippe" at bottom center. Written in New York City on June 9, 1937. On "Pan American Airways, Inc. / General Offices - Chrysler Building - New York City / Office of the President" letterhead, complete with an embossed winged globe logo. The watermarked cream paper is in very good to near fine condition. Expected wear including light paper folds and paper clip ghost impressions verso, 8.5" x 11".

Juan Trippe wrote Hollywood film producer Samuel Goldwyn in the spring of 1937.

In part:

"Dear Mr. Goldwyn:

I was very pleased to learn from your letter…that you desire to produce a feature photoplay based upon the Transatlantic air transport operations of our company. Knowing, as we do, the type of productions which you have made in the past, and further assured by the specific conditions outlined in your letter with regard to our mutual cooperation, we are pleased with this opportunity of working with you toward the successful development of such a project…"

While it's unclear which feature film Trippe and Goldwyn were discussing, or indeed if the "photoplay" was ever produced, Hollywood's interest in the airline industry is obvious. During the 1930s, airline travel was perceived not only as prestigious, but also romantic, providing the perfect movie setting for adventurous, dramatic, and romantic vehicles. Take for instance Warner Brothers' comparable production of China Clipper (1936), in which Pat O'Brien and Humphrey Bogart are pilots competing to extend airline service across the Pacific Ocean in Pan Am Clipper Flying Boats.

Juan Trippe founded Pan American World Airways on the threshold of the modern aviation industry, in 1927. From its small-scale beginnings as a limited air mail and passenger service in the Caribbean, Pan Am became the leading airline in the United States before its collapse in 1991. A large part of the corporation's success was due to its founder's ambitious vision. Trippe's insistence on the research and development of new aircraft and technologies set the precedent for other airlines. Thanks to its cutting edge technology, Pan Am could carry more passengers over longer distances and varied routes. This in turn popularized airplane travel as a safe and efficient mode of transportation during its first pivotal decades.

Willian Van Dusen (1902-1974), mentioned in Trippe's letter, served as Pan Am's director of public relations for 20 years.
