[Journalism] Barbara Walters & Morley Safer (2) SBs Inscribed to Photographer Yousuf Karsh, Ex. Karsh Estate
Group signed books

A pair of signed first edition books by broadcast journalists Barbara Walters and Morley Safer, gifted to famed photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) and his wife, Estrellita. New York, published 1970 & 1990. Retained in the couple's personal collection until Estrellita's death in 2025, each bearing an official estate label of provenance on the inside front pastedown, easily removable if desired. Exhibits varying degrees of shelf wear and light soiling throughout. Even toning to the interior of Walters' book. Original dustjackets maintained. Overall, very good.

Karsh Estate Provenance: Held by the Estate of Yousuf & Estrellita Karsh; after Yousuf's death in 2002 passing to Estrellita Karsh; after Estrellita's death in March 2025 passing to Katherine Getchell, Co-Executor, Estrellita Karsh Estate and Personal Representative of Estrellita Karsh.

The lot includes:

1.) "How to Talk With Practically Anybody About Practically Anything" by Barbara Walters. New York: Doubleday, 1970. 195pp. Signed and inscribed on the free front endpaper, in full: "To Estrellita and Yousuf- who need none of the advice in this book- but will, I hope, enjoy it./ With warm affection, Barbara". 5.5" x 8.5".

2.) "Flashbacks On Returning to Vietnam" by Morley Safer. New York: Random House, 1990. 206pp. Signed and inscribed on the free front endpaper: "To Yousuf and Estrellita/ with love & respect/ Morley, April 1990". 6.5" x 9.5".

Yousuf Karsh is recognized as one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century. Arriving in Canada in 1924 as an Armenian refugee, Karsh eventually settled in Ottawa. Over six decades, he mastered the art of portraiture and created a unique chronicle of his time through images of celebrated legends. Some of his most notable subjects include Winston Churchill, Audrey Hepburn, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Ernest Hemingway, among others. A celebrity in his own right, he was an elegant and charming public figure, captivating audiences with compelling stories told in images and words. Karsh sought to capture, as he put it, the "elusive moment of truth," revealing the essential nature of his subjects as reflected in their eyes, hands, and attitudes.
