Chamberlain" as Governor of Maine, countersigned "Wm. P. In part, "I, Joshua L. Chamberlain, Governor of the State of Maine, by virtue of the authority conferred on me by an Act of the Legislature of said State of Maine, entitled, "An Act to aid in the construction of the European and North American Railway" … in consideration of one dollar, paid by said Railway Company … do hereby transfer and convey to said European and North American Railway Company, all the timber and lands belonging to said State, situated upon the waters of the Penobscot and Saint John Rivers, to be used by said company to aid in the construction of its contemplated line of railway …" The specific lands transferred are then identified.

The 114 mile line was completed in October 1871. A ceremony celebrating completion of the line was attended by U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant and Canadian Governor General Lord Lisgar at the boundary bridge crossing the St. Croix River. On November 9, 1872, the Eastern Division was consolidated, along with the Nova Scotia Railway, into the Intercolonial Railway also referred to as the Intercolonial Railway of Canada which operated from 1872-1918, when it became part of Canadian National Railways which still serves Canada today. Canadian National's slogan is "North America's Railroad," evocative of part of the company's name on this deed, "North American Railway."
