Description:

Joshua Chamberlain ALS as President of Bowdoin College

CHAMBERLAIN, JOSHUA. Autograph Letter Signed, “J. L. Chamberlain”, 1 p. front and verso, October 18, 1878, Brunswick, 5.5" x 9", to an unknown recipient. Expected folds, toning, mounting remnants at left edge, else Very Good.

The letter, in part, “How many lectures can Mr. Benjamin give? Is he a graduate, & of what college? Would the expense of his course come out of this college, or how is it provided for? I do not see that there is any objection to placing his name on our catalogue if he is to come. On knowing the particulars of the proposal, I will invite Mr. B. to give the course stating to him that friends of the college will make the provision, then he will have a standing as lecturer. Since people will complain of it, what say we do, you may be sure of that. But I think it would be of advantage to the college to have such a course…He certainly is gaining much respect & favor from his appearances thus far.”
