Joseph Wheeler, Confederate General, ALS

2pp ALS inscribed overall and signed by Confederate Major General Joseph "Fightin' Joe" Wheeler (1836-1906) as "Joseph Wheeler" on the top of the second page. With "Army and Navy Club of the City of New York" letterhead on the third page. Written in Wheeler, Alabama on December 11, 1902. The watermarked cream bifold stationery is in very good condition, with expected paper folds. Uneven toning and isolated foxing found on the first page, and minor mounting traces on the blank fourth page. Each page measures 5" x 7.875."

Wheeler wrote this letter from Pond Spring, his 1870s farmhouse in Wheeler, Alabama, where he had lived with his wife and family after the Civil War. The former Confederate General declined an invitation "to lecture in your city." He continued, "I am so far off + conscientious about my duties that it is with regret that I cannot make any engagements at this time."

Joseph Wheeler's military experience spanned two armies and five decades. The West Point graduate gained soldiering experience in the U.S. Army in the western territories before resigning in April 1861 and defecting to the Confederate Army. He became an invaluable cavalry commander of the Alabama Infantry and saw considerable action in the Western Theater during the Civil War. Wheeler's valor and determination--he was wounded three times and sixteen of his mounts were killed beneath him--led to his quick advancement; he eventually became a Major General.

After the Civil War, Wheeler was a gentleman farmer and lawyer at his northern Alabama estate near the Tennessee border. He served as an Alabama Congressman throughout the 1880s-1890s until volunteering to fight in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars in his early 60s! Wheeler also wrote several books during his twilight years.
