Description:

Reed Joseph 1741 - 1785 Joseph Reed signed Philadelphia, PA Revolutionary War dated document.

Two war dated documents, a Supreme Council pay voucher and companion Supreme Court decree, from Revolutionary War Pennsylvania. Pay voucher signed by President of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council Joseph Reed as "Jos. Reed, Presid t" at bottom right; the decree signed by Prothonotary of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Edward Burd as "Edw. Burd Prot. Sup. Cur" at bottom right. Docket information found verso. Both pieces are in very good condition with minor toning, measuring 8.125" x 6.625". Both documents have expected folds and creases, with a 1" tear appearing in the upper left corner of both documents.

The July 24, 1780 pay voucher, signed by Pennsylvania's President Joseph Reed in Philadelphia, PA, ordered Treasurer David Rittenhouse to pay £434 to "Randell Mitchell" in either "Continental Money" or in "State Money" with a currency ratio of one to one. The document is signed "Jos. Reed, Presid t" at bottom right. The claimant endorsed the pay voucher verso.

The pay voucher was the result of an earlier Supreme Court decree dated April 4, 1780 which granted "Randle Mitchell" £399 and ten shillings, signed by Prothonotary of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Edward Burd as "Edw. Burd Prot. Sup. Cur" at bottom right. "Upon the allegations made + proofs exhibited the Justices of the Supreme Court do decree to the Claimant the Sum of three hundred and ninety nine pounds ten shillings to be paid him only of the forfeited Estate of Peter Campble who was attainted of High Treason. The Demand being for the Maintenance of Mary Campble wife of the said Peter Campble from December 1776 to 1st April 1779". This amount added to court costs made up the £434 awarded to the claimant three months later.

Secondary source materials reveal that Randall Mitchell was an Irish immigrant and dry goods merchant. Peter Campbell, here characterized as a traitor to the state, was probably a Loyalist. Mitchell was reimbursed from Campbell's estate for having sheltered Campbell's wife over a two-year-period.

Joseph Reed (1741-1785) was educated at what would later become the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University, as well as abroad in London. He served in the Continental Army for three years. In 1778, Reed was one of five Pennsylvania delegates to the Continental Congress to sign the Articles of Confederation and was elected to the Presidency of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania in 1778. Reed's aggressive official policies towards Pennsylvania Loyalists like Peter Campbell is well-noted.

Edward Burd (1749-1833) was also a Revolutionary War veteran and served as Prothonotary of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court between 1778 and 1805.
