Description:

Joseph R. Lamar TLS: He Was Woodrow Wilson's Childhood Friend & Later Supreme Court Associate Justice

A 1p typed letter signed by Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857-1916) as "J.R. Lamar" near center right. Written in Augusta, Georgia on March 29, 1906 on a single leaf of stationery with "Lamar & Callaway, / Attorneys at Law, / 222-224 Dyer Building, / Augusta, GA." letterhead. Docketed in red colored pencil at bottom. Expected transmittal folds. Moderately and evenly toned with darkened edges. A small hole at center top, probably from clerical filing. Isolated foxing and ghost ink impressions, else good. 8.5" x 11."

Joseph R. Lamar wrote a correspondent named W.H. Fleming that "…the delay in answering is my fault, as Mr. King submitted the matter to me some time since, and asked for my opinion. I have been so engaged, and so frequently absent from the City, that I have not been able to give the matter proper attention…"

Lamar's correspondent W.H. Fleming was almost certainly William Henry Fleming (1856-1944), a mutual childhood friend of his and future 28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson, Lamar, and Fleming grew up in Augusta, Georgia in the late nineteenth century. In the late 1860s, an amateur baseball team called the Lightfoot Baseball Club was formed by the neighborhood boys. Wilson served as club president and 2nd baseman and Lamar played 3rd base. All three childhood playmates--Wilson, Lamar, and Fleming--became lawyers.

Lamar was nominated as a U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice by President William Taft in 1910; he served on the bench until his death in early 1916.
