Description:

Pulitzer Joseph 1847 - 1911

Rare Autograph! Joseph Pulitzer boldly signs a proxy, appointing the general manager of his "New York World" to vote his shares at a meeting of "stockholders of the Pulitzer Publishing Company of St Louis Missouri..."

Rare partly printed document signed "Joseph Pulitzer," 1p, 8" x 6.75". New York, January 15, 1901. Completed in manuscript and notarized. Fine condition.

In full: "Know all Men by these Presents, that I Joseph Pulitzer do hereby constitute and appoint F.D. White Attorney and Agent for me, and in my name, place and stead, to vote as my proxy at a meeting election of of the Pulitzer Publishing Company, St Louis, on Monday Jan. 21, 1901 according to the number of votes I should be entitled to vote if then personally present. In Witness Whereof..." Florence D. White, hired as a reporter by Pulitzer when he was 16, was General Manager of Pulitzer's "New York World."

Joseph Pulitzer had founded the "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" in 1878 and continued to own and publish it until his death. His eyes began to fail in the 1880s and by the end of the decade, at age 42, Joseph Pulitzer was virtually blind. Under his authorization, letters and documents requiring his signature were mostly signed by his secretaries. However, he personally signed this proxy whose validity would have been challenged had a secretary signed his name. Autograph material authentically signed by Joseph Pulitzer has rarely appeared on the market. In fact, before this item became available, only one Joseph Pulitzer signed document or letter had appeared at a major public auction in at least the last 25 years.
