Written from CSA Headquarters in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, Johnston issues orders to one of his colonels as he organized his forces before the First Battle of Manassas. His letter, in part, "The force at Sherpardstown being too small for the service required of it, you will please proceed to that place early tomorrow with the remainder of your regiment and take command. The service required of you will be the observation of all the crossing places of the Potomac between this point and those observed by Colonel Stewart. It is important that you communicate frequently with that officer. / Capt. Doyle can give you much valuable information and you are referred to him for the instruction he has from time to time received, which may be applicable to the present state of things."

When the Confederate States Army was formed in 1861, Lieutenant General Joseph E. Johnston was the most senior officer to throw in his lot with the rebels. While an experienced and able commander, Johnston did not get along well with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. When Johnston was wounded in battle in 1862, Davis used the opportunity to put Robert E. Lee in command. Johnston recovered from his wounds and was put in command of the Department of the West, where he faced his old friend Major General William T. Sherman.

After the war, Johnston served in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a pallbearer at Sherman’s funeral in 1891 - a cold, rainy day in New York. Warned by one of his aides that he would catch his death, Johnston said, "Billy would do the same for me." Johnston died two weeks later of pneumonia.
