Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. Signed 1807 CT Militia Appointment
PPDS

A 1p partly printed and partly manuscript document, being a Connecticut state militia appointment, beautifully signed by Governor of Connecticut Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. (1740-1809) as "Jona Trumbull" at lower right. May 20, 1807. Hartford, Connecticut. Countersigned by Secretary of the State Samuel Wyllys (1739-1823), as "Samuel Wyllys" at lower left. On laid paper, with an embossed red wax and sawtooth paper seal depicting the Seal of Connecticut (with its three grapevines) at upper left. Endorsed by the promoted officer Ezra Kinney verso. Expected wear including toning and flattened paper folds, several with closed tears or breaks and some of which have been discretely restored. The date year "1807" well above Trumbull's signature has been retouched. Minor loss to the state seal has been partly repaired. The outer leaf where the endorsement is located is missing its bottom portion. Else near fine. 12.875" x 7.75."

The appointment names "Ezra Kenney, Gent." as "Ensign of the eighth Company in the third Regiment of Militia in this State, to take rank from April 17th 1807." The officer in question was possibly Ezra Kinney (1773-1873) (also spelled Kinne) of southeastern Connecticut. Ezra Kinney was the youngest son of Captain Ezra Kinney (1727-1795), a French & Indian War and Revolutionary War veteran who, according to family genealogy, responded to the Lexington Alarm and served in the "8th Regm. for State defense." Captain Ezra Kinney was a farmer and slaveholder who lived in Voluntown, Connecticut.

Just after embarking on his political career, Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. had served as Paymaster General of the Northern Department during the Revolutionary War - a post of significant responsibility. He was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and served as the aide-de-camp of George Washington. Trumbull, Jr. was reelected to serve as Governor of Connecticut for eleven consecutive terms, holding office from 1797 until his death in 1809.
