Description:

Salk Jonas 1914 - 1995 Jonas Salk archive dated just after release of polio vaccine in mid-April 1955.

Small archive relating to medical research scientist Jonas Salk including a signed matted photograph, an Associated Press wire photo, and a July 1955 National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis "Report to Physicians".

The matted 4.5" x 6.5" black and white photograph of Dr. Salk is dedicated "To John J. Loaghlin with all good wishes" and signed "Jonas E. Salk" in black ink on bottom of cream bifold mat. The bust portrait shows a mature Salk wearing a suit, figural tie, and glasses, and is in immaculate condition. The inner front edge of the mat is stamped with the dedicatee's name.

An Associated Press working glossy photo dated April 29, 1955 was taken by a press photographer but not used for publication. It shows 34 th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) awarding Dr. Salk a citation at the White House on April 22, 1955. A typed caption, complete with office use only coding, is juxtaposed at the right edge of the photo. Two stamps appear verso indicating that the photo was not used but filed in the news agency archive. In fine to very fine condition, with some wrinkles and isolated tears to corners and edges, photo measuring 10" x 8.125".

The last archive item is a 2pp letter released from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis in July 1955 on organization letterhead subtitled "Report to Physicians: Salk Vaccine". The letter auto signed by the group's Medical Director Hart E. Van Riper directed doctors to consult the booklet originally enclosed (this booklet is not included in the lot). This outreach kept practicing physicians informed about the latest polio medical research.

Jonas Salk (1914-1995) developed a highly effective polio vaccine that promised to eradicate the disease worldwide. Test results of a polio vaccine study deeming it safe for widespread use were released on April 12, 1955, ten years after the death of perhaps the most well-known polio victim, 32 nd U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945). Salk worked under the auspices of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and experimented by giving animals, the mentally retarded, family members, and other "polio pioneers" doses of a killed polio vaccine. Injections of Salk's mixture cured between 80-90% of patients, and this recovery rate would only improve.

Materials documenting a tremendously important medical breakthrough!
