John Wilkes Booth Reward Orders!

[LINCOLN ASSASSINATION]. Printed Document, General Orders No. 164, November 24, 1865.  1 p., 5" x 7.5"

“All persons claiming reward for the apprehension of John Wilkes Booth, Lewis Payne, G. A. Atzerodt, and David E. Herold, and Jefferson Davis, or either of them, are notified to file their claims and their proofs with the Adjutant General, for final adjudication by the special commission appointed to award and determine upon the validity of such claims, before the first day of January next, after which time no claims will be received.”

On November 24, 1865, President Andrew Johnson issued this order regarding rewards and canceling rewards for the arrest of five others including John H. Surratt.

Although hundreds submitted claims for the rewards, the commission confined its serious consideration to Lafayette Baker, whom Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton had summoned to investigate; two other detectives, Everton Conger and Luther Baker; and the 16th New York Cavalry regiment.  The commission determined that Lieutenant Edward Doherty of the 16th New York should receive 10 percent of the $75,000 reward, Lafayette Baker should receive $3,750, the two detectives $4,000 each, and the remainder going to the twenty-six other officers and men of the regiment. Sergeant Boston Corbett, who fatally wounded Booth, was to receive $2,545.68.  Later, a committee appointed by the U.S. House of Representatives overturned the decision and gave $17,500 each to Lafayette Baker and Conger, and reduced Doherty’s award to $2,500.

Members of the 1st Delaware cavalry split $25,000 for the arrest of George A. Atzerodt, and eight officers and detectives divided $10,000 for the arrest of Lewis Payne.

The $100,000 reward for the capture of Jefferson Davis went to the 4th Michigan Cavalry. Lieutenant Colonel B. D. Pritchard received $10,000, and each of the 462 officers and men received a portion of the remaining $90,000, based on their rank, from $729.60 for each of the two captains down to $166.76 for each of the 315 privates.
