Four volumes containing works by John Wesley (1703-1791), the founder of the Methodist movement; Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), the influential American preacher; and "Impartial Hand," an anonymous pro-Methodist commentator from the period. The books contain works dating between ca. 1742-1781. Of particular interest in the lot is the amount of materials relating to the First Great Awakening in New England, specifically Northampton, Massachusetts.

The lot is comprised of, in chronological order:

1. A volume being the assembled texts of John Wesley, "A Narrative of the Late Work of God At and Near Northampton, In New-England. Extracted from Mr. Edwards's Letter to Dr. Coleman" (Bristol: Printed by Felix Farley…, attributed 1742), 48pp; followed by John Wesley, "The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God…" (London: Printed by W. Strahan; and sold by T. Tyre, near Gray's Inn Gate, Holbourn; and at the Foundery, near Upper Moorfields, MDCCXLIV [1744]), 48pp; followed by Jonathan Edwards, "Thoughts Concerning the Present Revival of Religion in New-England" (London: Printed by W. Strahan; and sold by T. Tyre, near Gray's-Inn Gate, Holborn; and at the Foundery, near Upper-Moor-Fields, MDCCXLV [1745]),

2. A copy of John Wesley, "A Farther Appeal to Men of Reason and Religion" (London: Printed by W. Strahan; and sold by T. Tyre, near Gray's Inn-Gate, Holborn; Henry Butler, in Bow Church-Yard; and at the Foundery, near Upper-Moor-Fields, MDCCXLV [1745]). With handsome leather three quarter binding from 1898. Ex-libris belonging to John William Willis Bund affixed to front pastedown endpaper. A former collector's sticker, as "T. Vickers-Wood…" appears on the back pastedown endpaper. 3. A copy of Impartial Hand, Third Edition, "A Brief Account of the late Persecution and barbarous Usage of the Methodists at Exeter, Wherein The Characters of the Rioters, their Aiders, and Abettors, are fully described, their Reasons and Pretentions fairly examined, and fully refuted" (Exon: Printed by Andrew and Sarah Brice, at their New Printing-Office, in Northgate-street, for Aaron Tozer, Bookseller, opposite to St. Martin's Lane, 1746). The last printed page is inscribed at bottom: "The Gift of the Author to Thomas Gordon Esqr." Rebound in maroon cloth, and very clean and crisp within. 96pp. 4.75" x 7.375" x .25." 12mo.

4. A volume being the assembled texts of: John Wesley, Sixth Edition, "An Earnest Appeal to Men of Reason & Religion" (Bristol: Printed by W. Pine, in Wine-Street, 1771), 106pp; followed by John Wesley, Fifth Edition, "A Farther Appeal to Men of Reason and Religion" (London: Printed by J. Paramore, at the Foundery, Moorfields: And sold at the Rev. Mr. Wesley's New Chapel, in the City Road, and at his Preaching-Houses in Town and Country, 1781), 141pp. Original marbled covers and three quarter binding. Inscribed or hand-stamped with numerous former owners' names on the front pastedown and loose endpapers, including "John Woodrow / Left Lynn to Travel / June 25: 1787"; "Samuel Williamson"; and "Frederic Mason." Expected condition issues effect paper. 4.125" x 7" x 1.125." 12mo.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
