John Wesley's 1st Ed. "A Plain Account of Christian Perfection", 1766
First Edition book
A first edition copy of the Reverend John Wesley's "A Plain Account of Christian Perfection as Believed and Taught…". Bristol: Printed by William Pine, 1766. 16mo, 162pp. Considered to be one of his most celebrated publications, Wesley's "Plain Account" records his journey to understanding the doctrine of Christian perfection. Within, the book offers a chronologically numbered list of steps he took to grasping the doctrine. Exhibits outside wear, including bumped corners, creasing at joints, and rubbing to cover and spine. Uneven age toning within, with areas of light staining to some pages. Overall, very good with sound binding.

John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist who lead a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Although Wesley was barred from preaching in many parish churches during the early part of his ministry, he later became widely respected, and by the end of his life, was described as "the best-loved man in England."

Within many denominations of Christianity, Christian perfection is the theological concept of the process or the event of achieving spiritual maturity. The ultimate goal of this process is union with God characterized by pure love. In traditional Calvinism specifically, perfection was viewed as a gift bestowed on righteous persons only after their death, an idea which was in turn revived within Protestantism by Wesley. The concept was transformed in his "Plain Account" by interpreting it through a lens that understood sanctification in light of justification, defining perfection as "purity of intention, dedicating all the life to God,".
