Description:

Tyler (President) John

John Tyler Four Language Massive Ships Passport

One oversized partially printed sheet, 21.5" x 16.5". Dated "December 31, 1844", and signed by John Tyler as President "J. Tyler". Countersigned by Secretary of State John C. Calhoun. Printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch. Saw toothed Presidential seal intact and affixed mid document. Light toning and expected folds with slight loss of paper along fold lines, not affecting text.  Lovely strong contrasting ink with vibrant signatures. Tyler's signature is unusually bold on this document.

This passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch authorizes passage of "Holder Almy", master or commander of the Ship called "Ocean of the burden of 369 & 62/95 tons, or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New Bedford, bound for Indian Ocean and laden with provisions, stores and Utensils for a Whaling voyage …"

Although little is known about this whaling boat and crew, this vessel was spotted in Australian waters several years later. On 1846, Nov 4, the ship and crew were in Sydney Australia, and one year later, per the shipindex.org website, also has the ship documented as:

Ocean (American Barque, Holder Almy, Master, 350 tons, from A Whaling Voyage to Port Jackson, New South Wales 16th August 1847), and carrying sperm oil. A copy of the original list/log from this voyage is shown in an image, and will also accompany this document.

A handsome John Tyler signed example of this exceptionally large four language ship passport. Would present well framed.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
