Tyler (President) John 1790 - 1862 John Tyler free frank to William Lee of the Red Jacket Garden

Address Leaf Free Franked "J. Tyler," folded to 5" x 3". Addressed by Tyler to "William Lee Esqr / Red Jacket Garden / Elmira / Cemung C[oun]ty / New York." Greenish blue postmarks "FREE" and "NORFOLK VA APR 29," no year. Minor flaws but none on address panel. Fine condition.

William Lee owned a "place of entertainment" in Elmira which he named the "Red Jacket Garden" in honor of the Seneca chief who was born in and lived in the area and played a prominent role in negotiations with the new U.S. federal government after the Revolution. In 1792, he met with President George Washington who presented him with a special "peace medal," a large oval of silver plate engraved with an image of Washington on the right-hand side shaking Red Jacket's hand; below was inscribed "George Washington," "Red Jacket," and "1792."
