Description:

John Singer Sargent ANS on Van Dyck Portrait Postcard

A vintage postcard signed and inscribed by American expatriate artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) as "Yours faithfully / John S. Sargent" along the bottom recto. The postcard image is a reproduction of Sir Anthony Van Dyck's portrait of Charles I, ca. 1635-1637. The reverse of the postcard is addressed to "J.T. Herbet Bailey, Esq. / The Editor, / The 'Connoisseur,' / 37 King Street. / WC." Postmarked from Chelsea on November 26, 1901. Expected toning commensurate with age. Scattered pencil inscriptions by a former collector, and a few wrinkled corners, else near fine. 5.5" x 3.5." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

The period of 1900-1907 was an immensely productive one in Sargent's career. In 1901, he produced the monumental portrait "Ena and Betty, Daughters of Asher and Mrs. Wertheimer," now in the collection of the Tate Gallery, as well as other portraits. Sargent charged about $5,000 for full-scale oil paintings and $400 for drawings, making the portrait business extremely lucrative.

Sargent took time from his busy schedule to pen this note to J.T. Herbet Bailey, editor of "The Connoisseur: An Illustrated Magazine for Collectors." The subscription-based collector's magazine was published in London between 1901-1911. It was profusely illustrated with images of artwork, antiques, pottery, jewelry, coins, books, silver, and other wares eagerly purchased by Edwardian collectors.
