John Singer Sargent ALS Re: Loan of "Indian books" With Bonus Engrossed Envelopes

An interesting lot of items autographed by American expatriate portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), comprised of an autograph letter signed by him as "John S. Sargent"; in addition to two engrossed envelopes. One of the envelopes is postmarked March 22, 1921, while the other materials are undated. [Boston, Massachusetts]. All three items feature stationery from The Copley-Plaza Boston Hotel, where Sargent frequently stayed during sojourns to the city. Three pieces total. Accompanied by an eBay invoice from University Archives from November 1999 listing the winning bid of over $300.

The lot includes:

1. A 1p autograph letter signed by Sargent as "John S. Sargent" at bottom. N.d. but pencil-inscribed in another hand as "Mar 20, 1921" at upper right. On bifold stationery with embossed "The Copley-Plaza Boston" letterhead. The inner pages and outermost leaf are blank. Flattened transmittal folds, else near fine. 5" x 6.5."

Sargent addressed this thank-you note to Dr. Theodore Jewett Eastman (1879-1931), a prominent Boston physician and antiques collector. Dr. Eastman lived at 71 Marlborough Street in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston between 1913 and his death in 1931. He was the nephew and estate executor of his maternal aunt, the famous female writer Sarah Orne Jewett of South Berwick, Maine.

Sargent wrote in full:

"Sunday

My dear Dr Eastman

I return the Indian books you so kindly lent me - I have found them most interesting and am much obliged to you for letting me look at them

Yours sincerely

John S. Sargent."

2.-3. Two "The Copley-Plaza Boston" envelopes inscribed by Sargent, the first being the original transmittal envelope which accompanied Sargent's letter, inscribed by him as "with books / Dr Theodore J. Eastman / 71 Marlborough Street" on the front cover. Slightly weathered verso, else neatly letter-opened. The second is an envelope inscribed by Sargent as "Dr Theodore J. Eastman / 71 Marlborough Street / Boston" bearing a canceled stamp and postmarked from Boston on March 22, 1921. Isolated postal smudges verso, else near fine.
