John Ruskin ALS & Photogravure, Warning of the Dangers of Vanity
ALS
A one page autograph letter from English polymath John Ruskin to an unknown author of a recently published pamphlet. Measuring 4.25" x 6.75" (sight), [Denmark Hill, London, England], February 3, 1870. Signed at conclusion as "J. Ruskin", he compliments the author on the contents of his pamphlet while also warning against the dangers of vanity. Matted together with a photogravure of Ruskin after the 1853-54 portrait painting by John Everett Millais, measuring 17.75" x 13.75" overall. Letter features expected wear, with scattered handling marks and light edge toning throughout. Otherwise, very good. Ready for framing!

In full:

"I am greatly interested by your pamphlet and in you:- Your letter to me is strange to me- it is like the flattering ones I get from weak & partly false persons.- Your pamphlet is neither false nor weak- and I accept the expression of your ^personal^ sympathy with me- though it is extravagant. But- I am anxious about you- nearly all the men I know who have risen by their own effort have fallen back again through their vanity- How far have you examined your own heart?- Vanity- if it does not wholly mislead us, may always undermines- drives us- partly mad- I have too much regret not to know well what it does. I am altogether busy just now- but answer me about what I first ask you.+

Ever truly yours, J Ruskin

[at top] +I am so much pleased with your pamphlet that I am afraid of doing you harm by telling you how much. That is why I ask."

A polymath in every sense of the word, John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a notable writer, lecturer, art critic, and philanthropist of the Victorian era. Known for writing on a number of subjects from economics to ornithology, Ruskin was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century up until the First World War. His writing style was also varied, having published essays, poems, travel guides and fairy tales. Today, Ruskin's ideas and concerns are widely recognized as having anticipated interest in environmentalism, sustainability, and ethical consumerism.
