Reed John

John Reed Writes a Letter of Going to China & Renting His Truro cottage, Which He Would Sell to Finance His Witness of "Ten Days that Shook The World" in Revolutionary Russia

Typed letter signed “John Reed”, typed on the 10” x 8” side of stationary. Minor staining, usual folds. Overall very good condition. He has hashed out the address portion of the stationary and replaced it with Croton-on Hudson, Jan. 28 (1917 written in pencil). The letter’s salutation is “Yours sincerely John Reed” in dark pencil. In full: "My dear Mr. Francis - I just received your letter. Thank you very much for your kindnesses, and particularly for this one. The check for Snow’s note will be mailed you in plenty of time, and you can collect the cancelled note from him and keep it for me. Thanks also for offering to see that the Sylvester note is taken up. Id’ rather have it taken up than extended. That leaves for you only the taxes and interest to attend to, and I think the rent of the big house in Truro ought to cover that easily. Mrs. Reed is going with me to China. / Now about that Truro house. On account of taking the Sylvester house away from Mr. Cook, I told him that I would rent him my Truro house for the summer for $80, if he wanted it. He doesn’t know whether he does or not, yet but will let you know. Do you think you could rent it? And for how much? I thought that we couldn’t get more than $150 for it, way down there. If the Cooks don’t want it perhaps they will suggest someone; they are thinking about it now. And you can also be thinking about it. You will be the agent, and get the regular commission, if the Cooks aren’t taking it themselves. / Yours sincerely John Reed”

He was married to writer and feminist Louise Bryant in November of 1916. Then in December he had a kidney removed. He lost his relationship with the Metropolitan and John pawned his late father's watch and sold his Cape Cod cottage to birth control activist and sex educator Margaret Sanger. Presumably this is the house that the Cooks were renting.

On August 17, 1917, John Reed and Louise Bryant set sail from New York to Europe, having first provided the State Department with legally sworn assurances that neither would represent the Socialist Party at a forthcoming conference in Stockholm. The pair were going as working journalists to see for themselves and report upon the sensational developments taking place in the fledgling republic of Russia. The pair arrived in the capital city of Petrograd immediately after the failed military coup of monarchist General Lavr Kornilov, an attempt to topple the Provisional Government of Alexander Kerensky by force of arms. Which lead to his writing Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days that Shook the World.
