Description:

John Quincy Adams Signed Copy "Jubilee of the Constitution"

"The Jubilee of the Constitution A Discourse Delivered At The Request Of THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY, in the City of New York, on Tuesday, The 30th of April 1839; Being the fiftieth anniversary of the Inauguration of George Washington as President of the United States, on Thursday, The 30th Of April, 1789." INSCRIBED and SIGNED by John Quincy Adams on a 2.5" x 1.25" sheet pasted onto the front end paper "Hon Samuel S. Wilde / From / John Quincy Adams". Published by Samuel Colman, New York, 1839. Books inscribed by Adams are scarce, even signed on a separate slip pasted into the book, which is how they exist in most cases. Near fine re-cased copy, the rear wrap replaced with a matching piece and the balance of the original materials laid back down. As such the binding is tight. The internal pages are overall clean with occasional fading foxing and/or handling marks. An excellent signed copy which presents well. Accompanied by a lovely engraving of John Quincy Adams. 6" x 9".

Adams' inscription is to Samuel Sumner Wilde (1771–1855) who was an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Wilde was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1789, winning admission to the Massachusetts Bar in 1792. He practiced law in several towns of the state's Maine District before settling in Boston after Maine achieved statehood in 1820. In 1815 he was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (the state's highest), serving until he retired in 1850.
