John Pickering fantastic family archive

 

Lovely Pickering family archive consisting of 4 ALS's by John Pickering, in addition to his signature "Hon. John Pickering", 1" x 4" on green paper adhered to a larger sheet. Accompanied by a bond dated "July 13th, 1818" for payment to "Timothy Pickering"; a single page transcript of a letter, and two large personal bookplates with the Pickering coat of arms. 8 pieces in total. John Pickering was a leading philologist, attorney and senator in Massachusetts, and solicitor for the city of Boston (1829-46). He was the eldest son of Timothy Pickering and as a younger man served as secretary to foreign ministers William Smith and Rufus King. He also served on the Governor's Council and represented Salem in the General Court.

  1. ALS as senator, 1 page, 10" x 8", Boston 1829, June 3. He writes to William Minot in regard to a "claim for passage money" from Theodore Parker, for a voyage to Rio.
  2. ALS, 1 page, 8" x 5", (Boston), 1835 Jan 19. He writes to Prof Greenleaf at C. Sumner's office. He sends a draft of a Judges report for consideration
  3. ALS, 1 page, 10" x 8", Boston, 1840 July . He write to Simon Greenleaf and Judge Joseph Story as per below.
  4. Plus transcript of the above  letter. "Your letter … requesting a copy of my bust, by Dexter, to be placed in the Law Institution at Cambridge, was received … Though I dare not make any pretensions to the rank which you have been pleased to allow me among our jurists, I cannot refuse to comply with this flatter request … I have accordingly made an arrangement with the artist …"
  5. ALS, 1 page, 10" x 8", (Boston), 1844 April 15. He regrets that Prof. Stuart will be unable to address his group
  6. Partially printed document by Gideon Southworth, 1 page, 13" x 8", Bridgewater, PA, 1818 July 13. His bond to Timothy Pickering in the amount of $907.42
  7. Two fine bookplates with the Pickering coat of arms and name, 3.75" x 5".
  8. Signature of "Hon. John Pickering", 1" x 4" on green paper adhered to a larger sheet, with pasted biography of him, along with a second pasted signature of "Tho Jackson"

 

A lovely Pickering family archive, all in very good condition with minor handling marks or expected folds.
