Partly Printed Document Signed “John McLean,” 1 page, 14.5” x 9.75”. Washington, D.C., July 6, 1825. With original address leaf. Small marginal burn hole in address leaf barely touches the right margin of the appointment. Minor toning and stains to blank area. Fine Condition.



Appointment of William Sherwood 3rd to Postmaster of Fairfield County, Connecticut, signed by future Supreme Court Justice, John McLean, then Postmaster General of the United States.



Sherwood Island State Park is named for the Sherwood family, who descended from Thomas Sherwood, an Englishman who immigrated to Fairfield in the 17th century. His family settled on Sherwood Island (then named Fox Island) in 1787. William Sherwood III, esq., is almost certainly a member of this illustrious Connecticut family.
