Mexican War

1pp ALS on unmarked pale blue stationery inscribed overall and signed " J.M. Washington" at center right. Written from Headquarters at Fort Constitution, New Hampshire on August 7, 1852. In near fine condition with slight expected folds, measuring 7.75" x 9.75". Washington wrote to the Adjutant General of the U.S. Army recommending the military appointment of a certain Charles E. Leighton of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

John M. Washington (1797-1853) was a West Point graduate. He fought in the Seminole Wars and later distinguished himself during the Mexican-American War, especially while commanding a battery at the Battle of Buena Vista. Washington served as Governor of New Mexico territory between October 1848 and 1849. Sixteen months after writing this letter, Washington drowned, along with his regiment (the 3rd Artillery), in the December 1853 wreck of the steamer "San Francisco".
