"My dear Admiral:

I have received your very kind and cordial invitation to become one of the Charter Members of the District of Columbia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and desire, in reply, to express my hearty sympathy with the patriotic purpose of the Association.

While I am not at liberty to unite with you in the organization of the Society, I will gladly do anything in my power to promote its interests, and shall hope to become one of its members at some future time…."

The District of Columbia chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution was established on April 20, 1890 by six charter members including Admiral David D. Porter, General W.S. Rosecrans, and General Adolphus W. Greely. At this time, Admiral Porter was elected President of the local chapter, and Vice President of the national society. The D.C. chapter, still active today, commemorates Revolutionary War veterans and events, encourages historical research, preserves topical artifacts, and cultivates a modern appreciation of foundational principles.

John M. Schofield was a career soldier and served as the 28th U.S. Secretary of War under the Grant and Johnson administrations. Although he was initially dismissed from West Point, Schofield later redeemed himself with a solid military record. During the Civil War, Schofield first fought Confederate guerillas in Missouri, and then participated in eastern campaigns. Schofield's promotion in 1895 acknowledged his lifetime contribution to the U.S. Army.

David D. Porter (1813-1891) served in the U.S. Navy for over 50 years, beginning as a 10-year-old midshipman and retiring as an Admiral in 1875. Porter served with distinction in the Civil War in the Atlantic and Mississippi River theaters.
