Description:

Schofield John

PSA/DNA slabbed signature clip of Union Civil War commander and 28th U.S. Secretary of War John M. Schofield (1831-1906) on a cream stock card inscribed and signed in black pen “J.M. Schofield, Lieut. Genl. U.S.A.”. In very good to near fine condition, with overall even toning. Biographical information (including some incorrect!) in light pencil verso. The card measures 4" x 2.25" while the slab measures 7.25" x 4.25".

Schofield's listed rank dates the signed card after February 1895, when he was promoted Lieutenant General of the U.S. Army.

John M. Schofield was a career soldier, and the 28th U.S. Secretary of War under the Grant and Johnson administrations. Although he was initially dismissed from West Point, Schofield had a solid military record during the Civil War, first combatting Confederate guerillas in Missouri, and then during Sherman's March to the Sea. Schofield's 1895 promotion acknowledged his lifetime contribution to the U.S. Army.
