Col.

Supposing that you would probably not start from Springfield until this morning, I left a letter for you at Mt. Vernon directing you to encamp there tonight and join me tomorrow. But having as I now understand reached Camp McClellan last night, I presume you will be able to reach this point tonight. Do so if practicable.

Very respectfully

J.M. Schofield

Brig Genl".

Writing from a pop-up Union camp located six miles east of Sarcoxie, Missouri, Brigadier General John M. Schofield issued instructions to his subordinate Colonel Daniel Huston, Jr. (died 1884). Camp Curtis, where Schofield was stationed, and Springfield, Missouri, where Huston was marching from, were approximately 40 miles apart as the crow flies. Mt. Vernon, Missouri is a little further east than this distance's halfway point. The average Civil War soldier was expected to march 15 miles a day, or 30 miles a day on a forced march, so this distance would have taken between 1-3 days to traverse.

Less than two weeks later, on October 12, 1862, the Army of the Frontier would be officially established under the command of Schofield, and Huston would lead one of its divisions. Schofield and Huston were both West Point graduates, although Schofield had been initially dismissed. Yet the commander later redeemed himself with a solid military record. During the Civil War, Schofield first fought Confederate guerillas in Missouri, and then participated in eastern campaigns. Schofield's promotion in 1895 acknowledged his lifetime contribution to the U.S. Army.
