John Lake, Bishop of Sodor and Man & Chichester, Two Documents Signed - One On His Deathbed!

A letter and statement signed by John Lake, Bishop of Chichester from 1685-1689. The group includes the following:

Autograph Letter Signed. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7" x 7.5", no place, dated September 24, 1683. Signed "Jo. Sodor" and addressed to Benjamin Adams. A tightly written letter concerning livings awarded by the king, stating "all Livings in the King's immediate gift are now disposed of…" He also writes about a man identified as "Brown" not having to be concerned with being charged with any misdemeanors. Red wax seal is still present.

Deathbed Declaration Signed. Ip, measuring 6" x 7.75", no place, dated August 27, 1689. A statement signed by Lake on his sickbed, and ultimately deathbed, concerning the oath taken and the doctrine of the Church of England.

Both pages have been mounted on their left edge to an archival folder, measuring 10.75" x 15" overall and could easily be removed if desired. Both documents have flattened folds, with varying degrees of soiling and toning. Areas of paper loss and tearing from wax seal have been repaired. Bold signatures to both.

John Lake (1624-1689) served as Bishop of Sodor and Man, Bishop of Bristol, and Bishop of Chichester. Before entering the church, Lake fought for King Charles I during the English Civil War. In 1647 he was ordained and was appointed Bishop of Sodor and Man in 1683. He was one of the Seven Bishops who were imprisoned by King James II after opposing the Declaration of Indulgence. He passed away three days after his deathbed declaration, on August 30, 1689.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
