Document

Document Signed, dated December 14, 1792, entirely written in the hand of John Jay (1745–1829), one of America's most important Founding Fathers, who at the time was serving as the first Chief Justice of the United States. The document details amounts paid by and distributed among the creditors of Peter DuBois, carefully recording dividends on bonds and payments toward interest and principal. Jay has signed once as "John Jay" and once as "Mr. Jay." The text records the settlement of financial obligations with detailed distributions to heirs and creditors. The total dividends are noted as £1,697.4s, with allocations apportioned to prominent New York figures such as James Duane, James De Peyster, John Charlton, and Pierre Van Cortlandt. The verso bears a period docket, with expected folds and slight toning. The document measures 7.75" x 9.5".

Key New York related names appearing in the document include:

James Duane, delegate to the Continental Congress and first post-Revolutionary Mayor of New York City.

Pierre Van Cortlandt, the first Lieutenant Governor of New York.

James De Peyster and John Charlton, both members of powerful mercantile and landed families who shaped early New York's economic landscape.

John Jay (1745–1829) was a Founding Father of the United States, remembered as one of the nation's most accomplished statesmen, diplomats, and jurists. A key figure in the Revolutionary era, Jay co-authored The Federalist Papers alongside Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, helping to shape the Constitution's ratification. As a diplomat, he negotiated the Treaty of Paris (1783), which secured American independence, and later the Jay Treaty (1794) with Great Britain, which averted war and stabilized relations in the new Republic. Jay became the first Chief Justice of the United States (1789–1795), establishing early precedents for the Supreme Court, and subsequently served as Governor of New York (1795–1801), where he worked to reform the state's legal system and championed the gradual abolition of slavery.
