A Superb John Hancock Signed Manuscript, 1783, in remarkable condition

 

Bi-fold manuscript document signed on laid paper, 7.75" x 12.5". Extensively penned on three sides with the final page blank. Lovely intact Massachusetts state seal to the upper left corner of the first page. Vibrant strong contrasting ink with a large, bold signature by John Hancock, "John Hancock" using his typical sweeping florish, and co-signed by John Avery as Secretary "John Avery". Dated "April 24, 1783". In unusually bright, fresh condition with only a few pale scattered stains. Document has been professionally silked on the second and third page, with slight professional reinforcement along folds, hinge, and separations.

A superb document appointing Aaron Wood as "one of the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas in the County of Essex within the said Commonwealth of Massachusetts." In part: "Whereas by the Constitution and Frame of Civil Government agreed upon by the People of the said Commonwealth, and by them put in Force and Exercise upon the last Wednesday in October in then Year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred & Eighty and in the Fifth year of Independence of the United States of America it is proved that the Governor by Advice of the Council shall appoint Civil Officers; and whereas by a law made and passed the third Day of July One Thousand Seven hundred & Eighty two it is enacted that there shall be held and kept within each County of this Commonwealth at the Times & Places by law appointed a Court of Common Pleas by four Substantial discreet and learned Persons…I therefore reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Loyalty, Prudence and Ability of Aaron Wood Esqr have by and with the Advice of Council appointed and do by these Presents in the Name of the said Commonwealth of Massachusetts constitute and assign the said Aaron Wood Esqr of Boxford in the County of Essex within the said Commonwealth of Massachusetts to be one of the Justices of the said Court of Common Pleas in the County of Essex within the said Commonwealth of Massachusetts in all Causes wherein any of the standing Justices of the said Court are or may be interested, concerned or necessarily absent and do hereby authorize and empower you to have, use, exercise and execute all and singular the powers and jurisdictions unto a justice of the said Court belonging or in anywise appertaining so far as relates to the causes aforesaid…"
