Hancock John

A  handsome, bold, classic and enormous 4.5" John Hancock signature, gracing a large Justice appointment for Massachusetts. Hancock signed the document in full signature on the verso as Governor & Commander in Chief at Boston "John Hancock". Document size of 10" x 13" on laid paper with affixed Massachusetts embossed state seal to the upper left corner. Dated "June 29 1785". The document is unusually bright with a hint of light toning, expected folds and strong contrasting ink. Near fine with a few pin holes of loss along folds. The document is set off with a linen mat and framed alongside a lovely engraving of Hancock. Framed in a rubbed gilt tone frame to a completed size of 24" x 19.5" with windows on both sides to show the recto and verso of the document. Frame contains a few scant nicks.

 

An important signed document for an appointment for Josiah Thatcher, Esq. for a position of a Massachusetts Justice, signed with a fantastic example of a rare Hancock signature, embellished with his classic swoosh. Countersigned by John Avery, Jr. as Secretary. Shown in part below:

 

"Whereas by a law made and passed the third day of July One Thousand seven hundred and eighty two, it is enacted that there shall be held and kept within each and every of our counties at the Times and places by law appoint a Court of Common Pleas by four substantial discreet and learned persons each of whom to be an inhabitant of the same County wherein he shall be appointed …

 

We therefore reposing special trust and confidence in the loyalty Learning, Discretion & Ability of Josiah Thatcher of Gorham in our County of Gorham in our County of Cumberland …. Do appoint, assign and constitute him the said Josiah Thatcher Esq. to be our Justice of our Court of Common Pleas for the said Country of Cumberland … and we do hereby authorize and impower him to use, exercise and execute all and singular the powers authorities & jurisdictions unto a justice of the said Court …
