Original Secretarial Copy Manuscript Letter in the hand of John Avery from Hancock to the  "Selectmen of Charlestown, Roxbury, Dartmouth, Lexington & Concord,"  Boston, December 5, 1782, with autograph docketing of  "Letter to the  Selectmen of Charlestown, Roxbury etc, to make return of damage done those Towns by the  Enemy - Dec. 5th 1782".  2pp., 6.5 x 8". Very fine overall; some roughness to bottom edge of the sheet. Sold at Early American Auctions for $4593 on 10-22-06. Ex. Sigety, Ex. Christies.


"Boston Dec. 5, 1782 - Gentlemen, The General Court passed a Resolve dated March 8th 1782  requiring the Selectmen of those Towns within this Commonwealth wherein the Enemy have  made wanton Destruction of Property to cause to be transmitted to the Secretaries Office within  Sixty Days from said Date a fair and just return of the Damage thereby done, which Damage  (particularly that to real Property) is to be ascertained by the affidavits of People of known good  Character and if possible to be accompanied with a short recital of the Conduct of the Enemy in  each Transaction: And I find by the Secretary that you have made no returns in Consequence of  said Resolve -- The Minister of Foreign Affairs has wrote me a letter upon the Subject which I  laid before the General Court at their last Session and they have requested me to take effectual  Measures to obtain as speedily as possible authentic Returns from the Citizens of this  Commonwealth of every kind of Property which has been carried off or destroyed by the enemy  in the Course of the present War, and to transmit the same to the Minister aforesaid in Order  that the said Minister of Foreign Affairs may be enabled to transmit the same to the Minister  Plenipotentiary for negociating a Peace; as the great loss of Property which the Citizens of the  United States have sustained by the Enemy will be considered by the several States as an  insuperable bar to their making Restitution - Indemnification of the former Owners of Property  which has been or may be confiscated to, or forfeited by any of the States. Therefore agreeably  to the Intentions of the General Court I now earnestly recommend it to you to transmit to the  Secretary of this Commonwealth the Account of Losses sustained as aforesaid as soon as  possible. I am with Respect Gentlemen Your most humble Servant." Docket reads, "Letter to the  Selectmen of Charlestown, Roxbury etc, to make return of damage done those Towns by the  Enemy - Dec. 5th 1782"

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.

After payment has been made in full, University Archives will ship your purchase within 5 business days following receipt of full payment for item.Packages shipped internationally will have full value declared on shipping form.
