Description:

Hancock John 1737 - 1793 John Hancock notes to forward sperm whale candles and garden seeds to the British commander of the Fortress of Louisbourg during the French and Indian War.

His Autograph Endorsement on the docket of an Autograph letter Signed, "Geo St. Loe", 1 page, 7.25" x 8.75", Louisbourg, February 25, 1760, to Thomas Hancock in Boston. Docketed on conjoined, otherwise blank sheet. Two labels affixed at left margin not affecting text, light soiling at folds, else fine condition.


St. Lowe, writes to Hancock's uncle Thomas, in full: "I have but Just time to Acquaint you that I have sometime since sent you the Ball[an]ce of Y[ou]r Acc[oun]t and tat the same time desired you to send me some trifling things, when you send those things I must likewise beg of you to send me two Boxes of Spermacety [sic] Candles, and some Garden seeds of all kinds by the very first Opportunity -" He adds a short postscript: "I am informed the Hay you was [sic] so kind as to send me was burnt with the Vessels &c, in Consoe Harb[o]r by Accident no help for it. Adieu."

John Hancock, keeping records for his uncle, writes in the docket noting that the letter was from "Capt. St Loe Recd 17 March 1760" and notes that he should forward "2 box Spr Candles Garden Seeds."

George St. Loe was a captain in the 40th Regiment of Foot which participated in the second siege of Louisbourg in 1758. Following the fortress' capture, St. Loe was for some time in command of the former French post (Autographs and Manuscripts from the Collection of C. F. Gunther [Part Two] Anderson Galleries, April 28, 1919, Lot 159).
