John Hancock Memo Warning to Keep to Food Rations in Machias


[JOHN HANCOCK]. Original Secretarial copy manuscript memo to Mr. Devens, September  1781, With Hancock's own autograph docketing of: "Memo for Machias - Given a Memo to Mr. Devens -September 1781". 7" x 9". Very good.


Machias, (ME) was part of Massachusetts at this time in history and was also the home to the famous Liberty Pole, erected in 1775 which enraged the British Commander Moore of the schooner Margaretta. Machias was forced to provide lumber for British barracks in exchange for provisions which led to rebellion and the ultimate capture of the Margaretta in the Machias harbor. This very item was auctioned at Early American and sold $1,470 on 10-22-06. Ex Sigety, Ex Christies.

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax.
