Hancock John

John Hancock Autograph Note Signed as "Accepted/Tho. Hancock" as a Representative for his Uncle's Business in Boston

One page signed note, 7.5" x 4," docketed by Hancock on verso and signed by Hancock on behalf of Thomas Hancock as  "Accepted/Tho. Hancock" on recto. Dated "Annapolis Royal, 12 July 1763." Lightly toned with single center fold.

John Hancock, acting as representative of his uncle Thomas Hancock's shipping business, signs receipt in the name of his uncle, with his familiar signature and paragraph. John Hancock graduated from Harvard College in 1754 and then joined his uncle, Thomas Hancock, in his business. In 1763, John became a full partner in his uncle’s shipping business. When Thomas Hancock died in 1764, John Hancock inherited the business and his uncle’s estate, becoming one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. This promissory note was originally written while Thomas was alive, with John concluding the deal after his uncle's death. The Hancock & Co. endorsement is dated December 31, 1764. Hancock used his wealth and influence to aid the movement for American independence. He was president of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1777, when the Declaration of Independence was adopted and the United States was born.
