The check measures 6.25" x 2.75" while the slab measures 9.5" x 4.625".

John Bradley was awarded both the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart for his service at Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima, an isolated island of the Japanese archipelago vital to the American supply chain in the Pacific, was contested in a bloody month-long battle during the winter of 1945. Bradley was assigned to an infantry unit later involved in the symbolic flag raising on the top of Mount Suribachi.

The American flag was actually raised twice during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The first flag raising occurred at 8 AM on February 23, 1945 when a 40-man combat patrol was dispatched to climb up the east slope of Mount Suribachi to seize the crest. On top, Marines and Navy corpsmen John Bradley and Gerald Ziehme found a steel pipe to attach the flag unto. Seeing the raising of the national colors immediately caused loud cheering from the Marines, sailors, and Coast Guardsmen on the beach below. After the flag was raised, Bradley pitched in to help better position the flagstaff. The second flag raising, memorialized by the Pulitzer prize winning photo, was executed with a larger flag so that it could be seen more easily from surrounding areas.

Bradley was injured at Iwo Jima in mid-March 1945. He recuperated while traveling the United States on a four-month-long bond fund-raising tour. After his medical discharge from the Army in late 1945, Bradley operated a funeral parlor in his hometown.
