Description:

Mosby John

John "Grey Ghost" Mosby, ALS as Assistant Attorney for Dept of Justice

Single page autograph letter signed on Department of Justice, Washington letterhead. 8" x 10". Dated "July 10th, 1907", and boldly signed by John Singleton Mosby as "Jno S. Mosby".  Some light spreading of ink, and light offsetting to letterhead. Near fine with dark contrasting ink.

A wonderful letter by John Mosby, now an Assistant Attorney with the Department of Justice.  Mosby had achieved legendary status during the Civil War for his guerrilla like fighting style. As a Confederate cavalry commander he was known for his speed, and his lightning quick raids which captured Union troops and disrupted supply lines throughout much of the war. This elusiveness, earned him the nickname "Gray Ghost." Now 40 years later he commands Justice with the pen and not the 'sword'. As the Civil War ended, Mosby was just 31, and would live another five decades in his own individualistic style. He resumed his law practice in Warrenton, and by December, 1865 was prosecuting the internal revenue collector in Prince William County for mule-stealing. Nonetheless, during the year after receiving his parole, Mosby often found himself harassed by occupying Union forces, arrested on petty or trumped-up charges, until his wife and young son Revardy, after being rebuffed by President Andrew Johnson (despite their mutual kinship ties), met General Grant in January 1866 and secured a handwritten exemption from arrest and guarantee of safe conduct. Mosby continued in this capacity obtaining a series of federal government jobs and postings, many fighting rampant fraud in politically volatile situations.

This letter to his Cousin remarks on his recent injury, his new position in Washington, and lamenting that he wishes his duties would take him to Nashville (presumably to visit his cousin..). Shown in part below:

"  … I was very little hurt by being run over by a bicycle & I am entirely recovered … I now live in Washington- an Assistant Attorney in the Dept of Justice. I know the Washington correspondent of the Banner very well … I wish very much that my official duties could at some time take me to Nashville where I was married … "

An exceptional letter in vibrant collectible condition.
