Printed yellow ticket #1324 from “Texas Welcome Dinner, Honoring President and Mrs. Kennedy and Vice President and Mrs. Johnson” scheduled to take place in Austin, Texas on the evening of November 22, 1963. Ticket is attached to stub and was never used; it would have admitted one journalist into the Balcony Press Section. Graded by PSA/DNA as Full Mint 9. Ticket measures 6” x 2.5” within 9.5” x 4.5” PSA/DNA slab.

35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1919-1963) was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on Friday afternoon, November 22, 1963. 200 miles to the southwest in Austin, preparations were already well under way for a banquet to be hosted by the Texas Democratic State Committee. President Kennedy was scheduled to deliver remarks seven hours later in the state capital’s Municipal Auditorium. When news arrived that Kennedy was dead, and that 39th Texas Governor John Connally (1917-1993) was also injured in the Dallas cavalcade, the auditorium was already arranged with tables, chairs, and $100/plate settings.

Kennedy’s 2,500+ word speech would have reiterated his 1960 campaign promises, rallied support for the Democratic Party, and greased fund-raising wheels. This ticket holder might have heard Kennedy say: “For this country is moving and it must not stop. It cannot stop. For this is a time for courage and a time for challenge. Neither conformity nor complacency will do. Neither the fanatics nor the faint-hearted are needed. And our duty as a party is not to our party alone, but to the Nation, and, indeed, to all mankind. Our duty is not merely the preservation of political power but the preservation of peace and freedom.”

See a black and white photo of the auditorium arranged for the cancelled banquet below.

An eerie relic of Kennedyiana from a banquet the assassinated president never attended.
