Description:

Kennedy John

John F. Kennedy Signed Letter to Edna Kelly, Congresswoman who Blazed a Path for Women's Equality

Single page typed letter signed on Presidential White House letterhead, 6.75" x 9." A lovely warm typed letter, annotated by Kennedy who crossed out Edna's formal name of "Mrs. Kelly," and hand wrote in its place "Edna." Dated "August 20, 1962," and boldly signed by John Kennedy as "John Kennedy." Lightly toned, center mailing fold. Near fine.

"Dear Edna,

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to congratulate you again this year on you birthday. I hope that this note finds you in good health and spirits, and that you will have many happy returns of the day.

Sincerely,

John Kennedy"

Edna Kelly, an important delegate of the 1960 Democratic National Convention during Kennedy's campaign, had a significant and lengthy career in politics. In 1955 as chair of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe she led the first of five fact–finding missions to Europe and the Middle East. Based upon information gleaned from these trips and from her careful study of postwar Europe, Kelly recommended a wide variety of legislation. She was particularly successful introducing resolutions deploring religious persecutions in Eastern Europe. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, from the vantage of her committee, she urged the United States to play a more aggressive role in mediating Arab–Israeli peace accords through the aegis of the United Nations, though to little effect. She had additional roles in advocating for tax reductions for low-income single parents left with the sole responsibility of caring for their dependent children; and she promoted the first equal pay for equal work bill (which she originally introduced in the 1950's), but was in attendance when President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law in 1963. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy appointed her a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations, where she worked closely with her friend U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson. At the time of her retirement, she was the third–ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Her sources in Europe were legendary. A colleague recalled trips with Kelly were “like going abroad with Mata Hari."

A superb association letter in collectible condition.
