Description:

Kennedy John

Single page signed typed letter, 5.5" x 8.5", on letterhead of John F. Kennedy, Hotel Bellevue, Boston, MA. Dated "July 13, 1946" and both signed and annotated by John Kennedy as "Jack" with notes along the bottom of "Hope to see you very soon-Best to the very lovely Mrs. Elyah N. Jones". Accompanied by the originating letter on carbon with the right edge heavily chipped, 8" x 11", dated "June 20, 1946" to which John Kennedy responded to. Near fine with expected folds.

John F. Kennedy signs and annotates a warm thank you letter to an acquaintance for his kind comments on his Congressional "win" in Massachusetts. The jovial originating letter from E.N. Jones states "Congratulations! You must have done an excellent job in winning so easily over the multitude of candidates. However, I do regards very highly the judgement of the good old Boston people but you must remember that to be President of the United States, as a good Democrat, you must have support of the "Deep South".

To put this in perspective, the originating letter was written in 1946, merely 80 years after the death of Abraham Lincoln. Aside from the eerie foreboding comment/question on Kennedy becoming a potential presidential candidate, the letter addressed the adage of the era  "as a good Democrat, you must have support of the "Deep South"".  Jones's Southern reference stemmed from the Civil War period, when Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president, and Republicans were the face of Reconstruction and voting rights for blacks after the Civil War. Because of these events, and in dire protest and animosity to Republican philosophies, the South became solidly Democratic and stayed that way for over a 100 years post the Civil War. In fact it would not be until 1984 that the majority of Southern electoral votes went Republican!

Kennedy's warm response indicates his personal relationship with E.N. Jones noting "I am glad to hear that you are making out so well and I think you picked a beautiful spot in Greenwich for purchasing your home .. looking forward to seeing you soon".

Kennedy's start in the political arena began with the influence of his father. At the time Kennedy's father, urged U.S. Representative James Michael Curley to vacate his seat in the strongly Democratic 11th Congressional district in Massachusetts to become mayor of Boston in 1946. With his father financing and running his campaign, Kennedy won the Democratic primary with 12 percent of the vote, defeating ten other candidates. Though Republicans took control of the House in the 1946 election, Kennedy defeated his Republican opponent in the general election, taking 73 percent of the vote.

A fantastic letter, scarce signed with an personal post script.
