John F. Kennedy Sends Christmas Card to Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.’s College Roommate and Key Staffer in His 1946 Congressional Campaign, Envelope Addressed by JFK

This printed Christmas with a snowy winter scene of a church is signed in type “John F. Kennedy,” but Kennedy addressed the envelope in his own handwriting to “Mr. Richard Flood / Bay State Dept. / Massachusetts Ave / Cambridge / Mass.”

JOHN F. KENNEDY, Printed Card with Autograph Envelope, to Richard Flood, December 20, 1946, Palm Beach, Florida. 2 p., 7.5" x 6"; envelope with postmarked 3-cent stamp. Envelope torn opened along top edge; some damage to stamp; card very good.

Historical Background

Richard Flood had been a classmate and roommate of Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. at Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Like both Kennedy brothers, Flood had served in the Navy during World War II. When Joseph Kennedy Jr. was killed in England, John F. Kennedy reached out to Richard Flood for assistance in compiling As We Remember Joe, a memorial volume privately printed in 1945 as a gift to Kennedy’s parents and Joe’s close friends.

Flood also worked for three months on Kennedy’s campaign to represent Boston in Congress earlier in 1946. Kennedy won an overwhelming victory in the Democratic primary in June and went on to score a landslide victory in the general election in November.

The color illustration on the greeting card is the watercolor painting Christmas Eve; Dayton, Wyoming by German-born American artist Hans Kleiber (1887-1967).

Richard R. Flood (1914-1969) was born in Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard College in 1939 and from its law school in 1946 as of 1942. Flood served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. He received a master’s degree from the Harvard Business School cum laude in 1947. Admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1948, he established a practice in Lowell, Massachusetts, and was a partner in the firm of Flood, Valentine, and Foisy until his death.
