Description:

John F. Kennedy Jr. Childhood Photograph with Toy Gun

Measuring 5" x 7", No place [Atoka, Virginia], undated (Ca. 1963). A vintage color photograph of a young John F. Kennedy Jr., dressed in a military helmet and holding a toy submarine gun. The image was taken at the Kennedy family residence, Wexford, by official White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton. On verso is a pencil notation "C387-12", along with Kodak Paper watermarks. Faint toning to the photograph, with a small spot of soiling at the bottom edge. Minor bumping to edges. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded "Authentic Type 1". The slab measures 9.5" x 13.25". Accompanied by a COA from R&R Enterprises Autograph Auctions.

This adorable photo was taken over Veteran's Day weekend and was likely inspired by John F. Kennedy Jr.'s visit with his father to the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Wexford was a 166-acre estate located outside Middleburg, Virginia, named for the Irish birthplace of the Kennedy family. The home was designed by Jackie Kennedy, who sought to create "a retreat for her family to enjoy the peace and quiet of this spectacular countryside." Unfortunately, the Kennedys only spent three weekends at the house, with their last visit on November 10, 1963 - just days before John F. Kennedy's assassination. This image is a sobering last moment of childhood innocence taken only 12 days before his father's death.

Cecil William Stoughton(1920-2008) was an American photographer best known for being President John F. Kennedy's photographer during his White House years. Stoughton was present at the motorcade at which Kennedy was assassinated and subsequently took the only photograph on board Air Force One of Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in as the next President.
