John F. Kennedy (1919-1963) was inaugurated as the 35th U.S. President on Friday, January 20, 1961 in a ceremony also attended by his running mate and 36th U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973). The Inaugural Gala, not to be confused with the Inaugural Ball, was held at the National Guard Armory the Thursday night before Kennedy’s Friday afternoon inauguration ceremony. The event was hosted and produced by Frank Sinatra, and featured musical entertainment and comedic routines by Harry Bellafonte, Nat King Cole, Jimmy Durante, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelley, Ethel Merman, and many others. The gala was originally scheduled to be televised on NBC, yet an unexpected blizzard cut out much of Washington, DC’s power supply and made logistics difficult. Her inability to go home and change resulted in Ethel Merman’s singing her rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” while wearing a plaid winter coat!

A ticket commemorating a memorable event in the early Kennedy era, in outstanding condition!
