Description:

Kennedy John

John F. Kennedy original, first generation, 5" x 5", vintage, glossy, double-weight photograph by Cecil Stoughton, with Stoughton's unique numbering system on verso, his own file example.

On September 10, 1963, the Black Watch Pipes and Drums Regimental Band departed upon a tour of the USA and Canada which would last into December.  The band played in 63 cities, including Washington, DC, where the band performed on the South Lawn of the White House for the Kennedy family.  The performance took place on November 13, only nine days before the President was assassinated.  Nine of these pipers would later play at Kennedy's funeral, as the President had an interest in the music stemming from his Irish ancestry.  Photo is in fine vintage condition. Includes Stoughton's archive file markings on verso.

Cecil William Stoughton (January 18, 1920 - November 3, 2008) was an American photographer best known for being President John F. Kennedy's photographer during his White House years.  Stoughton was present at the motorcade at which Kennedy was assassinated, and subsequently took the only photograph on board Air Force One of Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in as the next President.

Provenance:  From the estate of Cecil Stoughton.
