John D. Rockefeller Owned Chinese Export Famille Rose Dinner Plate, Ex-Great Grandson Rodman Rockefeller
Tableware
A rare and lovely Chinese Export Famille Rose dinner plate, personally owned by John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937), founder of the Standard Oil dynasty, with provenance related to Alexandra "Sascha" von Metzler Rockefeller, second wife of his great-grandson Rodman Rockefeller (1932-2000). The dinner plate does not have any maker's marks but probably dates from the mid-19th century. 9.75" diameter, 1.125" high. Expected surface wear including isolated paint/gilt loss, scattered porcelain pitting, and minor spotting to back of plate. Else, in near fine condition. Accompanied by a copy of a Letter of Authenticity from Nadeau's Auction Gallery in Windsor, Connecticut, with original lot description.

The gorgeous rose medallion central court scene depicts two women and a boy holding a ball and conversing with a figure in the interior. The concave gilt-decorated rim has a vivid raspberry fish scale border alternating with roses in roundels, and oblong cartouches depicting landscapes in a mandarine palette. This rare Rose Medallion patterned Chinese export plate has an extremely high value on its own in addition to its provenance.

Rodman Rockefeller, an American businessman specializing in agribusiness, was the great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller (1837-1937), co-founder of Standard Oil; grandson of John D. Rockefeller, Jr; and son of Nelson A. Rockefeller, former Governor of New York and Vice President during the Ford administration. Rodman Rockefeller married Sascha von Metzler, a graduate of Parsons School of Design and an interior designer, in 1980.
