FREMONT, in the sum of One Thousand Dollars, payable on the surrender hereof, by the transfer of Fifty Acres of Agricultural Land, to his order, to be located by the holder after the completion of the above mentioned section of Rail Road, upon any of the Eight Million Acres donated by the State of Texas to the Company…"

John C. Fremont was dubbed the “Pathfinder” after leading five expeditions through Western territories during the 1830s and 1840s. The fiery Mexican War veteran was appointed Governor of California in 1847 and served as one of the first two senators from California. Fremont was a Republican Party presidential candidate in 1856 and 1864. He served as Governor of the Arizona Territory between 1878-1872.

The Memphis, El Paso and Pacific Railroad Company was one of nearly half a dozen railroad concerns chartered by the state of Texas in the early 1850s to create a transportation infrastructure. After the Civil War, Fremont became involved in the company and leveraged railroad land grants to obtain bonds later sold to international investors. The company's efforts stalled during the 1870s until the route between Texarkana and Forth Worth was finally completed by 1880.
