Reading in full:
"This will be handed to you by Dr. Samuel Carr, originally of South Carolina, but now of Baltimore, when he married, to whom I take the liberty of introducing you. He is an applicant for the place of Store Keeper of the Arsenal at Pikeville, near Baltimore. I am personally acquainted with Dr. Carr. He is a gentleman of great worth and respectability, a man of honor and a scholar, every way deserving of a much higher station; but owing to the purpose of the times, and the convenience of the Post, in reference to his connections in Baltimore, the appointment would be highly acceptable to him. I do hope that it may be consistent with your views to select him. In doing so, you would confer a favor on a deserving citizen and oblige his numerous friends and acquaintances, including myself."

John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) served as Secretary of War under President Monroe from 1817-1825 before becoming Vice President in 1825 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later went on to serve as Secretary of State under Presidents Tyler and Polk from 1844-1845.
