72-year-old General of the Armies John J. Pershing wrote the following letter declining a public speaking invitation:

"My Dear Cobb,

Your second telegram about my speaking for you on the 16th, was somewhat puzzling as, upon the receipt of your first one, I had called up your office and, in your absence, had explained that it would not be possible for me to comply.

The fact is that I had and still have a very annoying case of bronchitis which not only keeps me indoors but which entirely disqualifies me from accepting to speak in public, otherwise it would have been another story.

I deeply regret not being able to help you out in the most important work in which you are engaged, and in which I wish you every possible success.

It is a further source of regret not to see you again personally.

With cordial regards,

Yours sincerely,

John J. Pershing."

John J. Pershing was the most highly ranked American service member in 1933. After commanding the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, Pershing had been promoted to the rank of General of the Armies in 1919. This was a brilliant capstone to a successful 40-year-long military career served on three continents. He recalled his service in My Experience in the World War, which won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1932.

Pershing had graduated from West Point in 1886. While he was only in the 50th percentile of his graduating class, he had already demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. He served in Iowa, Arizona, New Mexico, North Dakota, Montana, and California throughout the 1890s fighting and removing Apache, Lakota, and Cree Indians. He later commanded the 10th Cavalry Regiment of Buffalo soldiers, which earned him the nickname "Black Jack."

Pershing served as a military instructor before embarking to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Service in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War followed shortly thereafter. Pershing was stationed in Japan, Manchuria, Paris, and San Francisco before waging war against Pancho Villa's partisans in Mexico in 1916. His bold military strategies on the Western Front secured his celebrity. Sadly, Pershing lived to see World War II; he lobbied support for his former co-combatants, the British, before the Americans entered the war in 1941.
