John Austin Wharton Morning Report a Few Weeks Prior to Stones River Campaign
Document

A Morning Report from Confederate General John Austin Wharton, just a few weeks before a skirmish with the Northern Army of the Cumberland. 1p, measuring 16.5" x 8.75", Nolensville, Tennessee, dated December 10th, 1862. The report details the units under Wharton's command and the number of soldiers on duty, on detached service, on leave, out sick, arrested, etc. The units within the report include the 8th Texas Regiment, 2nd Georgia Regiment, 4th Tennessee Regiment, 1st Confederate Regiment, 3rd Confederate Regiment, Tennessee Battery, Section Artillery, Gibsons Battery, and a Cavalry Company. The document has flattened folds, with small separations. Light toning and soiling throughout. Overall very good.

This report was submitted just a few weeks prior to a skirmish at Nolensville which would launch the Stones River Campaign. As the Right Wing of the Union Army of the Cumberland advanced from Nashville on December 26, 1862, it made contact with Confederate forces, mainly General John Wharton's cavalry brigade at Nolensville. The Confederate cavalry fought a delaying action before retreating south to Knob Gap. The Battle of Stones River, also known as the Second Battle of Murfreesboro, was fought just a few days later, lasting from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863.

John Austin Wharton (1828-1864) joined Col. B. F. Terry's Texas Rangers (8th Texas Cavalry) as captain of a company but would become commander of that unit after the deaths of Terry and Lt. Col. Lubbock. He was promoted brigadier general on November 18, 1862 and served under generals Forrest and Wheeler. He distinguished himself at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga and was promoted to Major General on November 10, 1863. The following year he was assigned to command of the cavalry in Gen. Richard Taylor's department over the 8th Texas, 2nd and 3rd Georgia, 4th and 2nd Tennessee, 1st and 3rd Confederate, 14th Alabama Battalion as well as a battalion of Tennessee Cavalry along with artillery batteries of Gibson and White. Tragically, Wharton was killed in a quarrel with Col. George Baylor over "military matters" in the hotel room of General Magruder on April 6, 1865. Baylor alleged that Wharton had slapped his face and called him a liar whereupon Baylor shot the unarmed Wharton.
